What's up with kids today? No respect for the past.
A couple blocks from my loft is a club called Mingles. Besides being the reason for monthly shootings and Jackson having to walk through broken glass, it's also been my introduction to hyphy, the East Bay's new rap style.
It's been my introduction because I hear that shit every night as the crowd lets out of Mingles and impromptu sideshows are held outside my window. Since Mingles is the home of hyphy, that's what fools are playing as they drive by. Mostly though, I only hear the yelling. Usually something to do with some guy ghost-riding his car to impress some chick who hollers back that she doesn't care causing the guy to up his game and screech around the block several times until you hear a crash and people running and then it's time to go back to sleep.
Any-noodles, since I love my city and my city's got a new musical style I wanted to know more about what was up. Apparently, when you're dancing hyphy, you're acting really stupid. But what's so new about this? Dancing like you're having a seizure? Man, Shock G was doing that shit in 1989. Let me quote him as he describes his new dance:
First I limp to the side like my leg was broken
Shakin' and twitchin' kinda like I was smokin'
Crazy wack funky
People say ya look like M.C. Hammer on crack, Humpty
That's all right 'cause my body's in motion
It's supposed to look like a fit or a convulsion
Anyone can play this game
This is my dance, y'all, Humpty Hump's my name
No two people will do it the same
Ya got it down when ya appear to be in pain
Humpin', funkin', jumpin',
jig around, shakin' ya rump,
and when the dude a chump pump points a finger like a stump
tell him step off, I'm doin' the Hump.
Where's the love? Where's the respect?
Let me also say that a few years ago I started hearing all the kids saying fasheezy. It seems to be alternately credited to one of the various hyphy artists; usually either Keak da Sneak, E-40 or Mac Dre. But I first heard fasheezy in 1998, when I was directing and editing this rap music video show; before any of those guys even had an album out. All the guys that came on the show told me that the word was new and that it was invented by Too Short; who had taken to calling himself Too Sheezy.
Again, no respect for the elders.
