There's a type of guy you see a lot around Oakland.
He's wearing the trucker hat, has the black-rimmed glasses and the skinny jeans, short sleeved plaid-patterned shirt and maybe a couple of tats. This is the classic indie-guy and he's everywhere in the home of the rock.
But, you know what? They're never from Oakland. These guys are always from the mid-west or some other mayonnaise part of the country. Native Oaklanders never dress like the indie guy. In fact, native Oaklanders never, really, dress in any particular style. They usually have their own individual look going on. I'm not sure why this is. It probably has something to do with diversity.
Similarly, you never see a native Oaklander white dude who pretends to be some black thug. Those kids are always from somewhere out through the tunnel. I think this is because all the kids from the Oakland hills get robbed often enough while growing up that they develop no such romantic illusions about gangster culture.
At least, that's how I see it.
